The Visiting Researchers Programme is an exciting new 5-year research initiative between UK and China, funded by British Council and Jiangsu Department of Education, who support ECRs and PGRs from universities in China to visit UK universities involved in the consortium, with a view to undertaking collaborative world-leading research in 3 broad thematic areas- Advanced Manufacturing, Environmental Engineering & Healthcare.
The placements for visiting PGR students are for 6 months and for ECRs between 6 to 12 months. We have successfully managed to place some students and ECRs in 2018. There are 54 Jiangsu applications for UK university in 2019 and 82% have been offered a place. We are now looking to plan potential visits for 2020. To assist with this process, we have started to pull together a “Capacity Register" for staff at various UK universities which we will then make available to Jiangsu partners to help them advertise potential research areas and inform of potential placements available.
Currently, we have over 240 academics registered from our 13 UK partners as willing to host students and ECRs. If you would like to register as a hosting academic, please download and fill in the Capacity Register below and send it to us.
It is agreed by both UK and Jiangsu that visting researchers will pay the following Bench Fee to cover their research cost during the visit, such as small items of equipement and conference travel.
6 month visit, PhD, £1,600
12 month visit, ECR, £3,200

Hi, I'm Zhonglin Lin, a visitng PhD student from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The half-year visit and research at the University of Liverpool is short but beautiful. When I came to UoL, I was immediately attracted by the spectacular architecture of the Victorian Gallery and Museum, one of the landmarks of the UoL. The SMARTLab I came to visit is located next to the gallery - the Computer Science Department. I participated and completed a research project related to robotic sensors, guided by Dr. Shan Luo. I am very grateful to Dr. Shan Luo for his guidance and I would like to thank my lab mates, who were very helpful in all aspects. Our lab has Ph.D students from 4 different countries and it is very enjoyable to work here.
In addition to the lab life, I also visited Liverpool's famous attractions such as Liverpool Cathedral, Albert Dock and Liverpool Museum. As a famous port city in the UK, Liverpool has a long history and culture. The must-see should be the Beatle’s Museum and the Cavern Club, where the Beatle’s used to play. Liverpool also has the best atmosphere for football, whether you are an avid fan of Liverpool F.C. or Everton F.C. The two football fields, Anfield Stadium and Goodison Park, are very close to each other. Every time Merseyside Derby is going on, everybody gets excited. During my visit, it is my honor to witness Liverpool F.C. win the Champions League again after 14 years. I also had the privilege of witnessing the Liverpool F.C.'s winning parade. This is an unforgettable experience.
I would like to recommend the University of Liverpool to students who are going to participate in the Jiangsu-UK 20+20 Visit Program. It will be lovely and you won't regret it.
